Dystonia may be caused by a genetic mutation (this is called inherited dystonia) or it s cause may be unknown (idiopathic dystonia). It can also be a side effect of a medication or a symptom of another movement disorder like Parkinson s disease (acquired dystonia). Dystonia may affect one or more parts of the body:
Dystonia - If caused by antidepressants switching drugs is the main strategy. Low dose aripiprazole can be used for orofacial and buccal dystonias from SSRIs.
Drug interactions; Dystonia caused by a reaction to a drug is known as tardive dystonia. The symptoms are typically only short-term and can be treated with medication.
Inherited disorders are transmitted genetically. In acquired forms, dystonia is caused by damage or degeneration of the brain (e.g. after a brain injury or stroke) or exposure to particular drugs. In idiopathic dystonia there is no identifiable cause and no structural damage or degeneration to the brain. Dystonia Classification
What is Dystonia? Secondary Dystonias. Drug-induced movement disorders come in different forms and can be caused by a number of medications
What causes dystonia? The cause of dystonia is not fully understood. There seems to be an underlying problem with the region of the brain called the basal ganglia which helps co-ordinate movements. The causes of dystonia are described as primary or secondary. Primary dystonia. Primary means the dystonia has been passed down through your genes
