Hydrocodone misuse is widespread in the U.S., where it is one of the most prescribed pain medications. In 2022, over 36.5 million people aged 12 and older used hydrocodone products in the past year, with 10.2% (3.7 million people) misusing the drug. Additionally, an estimated 6.1 million people in this age group had an opioid use disorder during the same period, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, titled “National Survey on Drug Use and Health.”Tramadol: Tramadol is a synthetic opioid used for moderate pain relief. Unlike stronger opioids, tramadol has a dual mechanism of action, working on opioid receptors and inhibiting serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. While considered less addictive than other opioids, tramadol misuse and dependency have increased in the U.S. in recent years.
